It was Joseph Wannall who originally purchased a plot in Glenwood Cemetery on March 1, 1864, paving the way for the interrment of many future Wannalls.  His own tombstone lists him as 60 years old at the time of his death, which would indicate he was born in 1811.  Records from the U.S. Census in the mid 1880's give his date of birth as 1815.  We flipped a coin.  An official directory of Washington (DC) and Georgetown in 1863 listed Joseph as a policeman at that time.  A later directory of 1872 (the year of his burial) listed him as a messenger for the State Department and living at 1411 11th Street, NW, Washington, DC.  His date of marriage to Jenette Cooley was thought to be January 10, 1846, as listed above, but a listing of Washington, D.C., marriages records it as October 1, 1846.  As a side note, that same listing shows them as "Joseph F. Wannell" and "Jannett E. Colley," both of which we know to be wrong.  Joseph and Jenette were the parents of the brothers William Tell Wannall and Henry Clay Wannall, about whose descendants we have our most complete information. The deceased children listed for Joseph and Jenette are assummed to be theirs due to the proximity of the grave sites at Glenwood Cemetery.
