| Hattie Hudson Wannall was one of four children of James Barecliff Hudson,
who, according to family word-of-mouth, was a direct descendant of the
famous explorer, Henry Hudson, discoverer of the Hudson Bay for the Dutch
in 1609. The link was documented in a hand-written memo by Hattie's
grandson's wife, Maxine Wilkens Wannall. You may view a photo copy
of the note by clicking on the "Genealogy Notes" button below. We know
from inherited memorabilia and genealogical research that Hattie and her
husband Charles lived at 4335 Ashland Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1890,
where Hattie was employed as a school teacher. We are continuing
our research and hope to report more about Charles and Hattie soon.
In May of 2009 one entry from the 1880 U.S. Census, referring to her
as "Harriet", reported that she was 33 years old and born in 1847.
Her occupation was not listed. But a second entry had her listed
as "Hattie", age 30, born in 1850, and working as a "Public School Teacher."
We know the latter is correct. Both census entries listed her mother
and father as being born in England.
