| Walter Allen Wannall's son's stepdaughter, Mary Bone, told us that
Walter served a tour of duty as an infantryman in Cuba during the Spanish
American War, then settled in the Washington area where he worked as a
house painter. His only surviving child was William Howard, who himself
had one child, William Howard Jr., who had one child William Howard III,
or Bill. (Thankfully, Bill is now living in the Maryland suburbs
of Washington, DC, and already has produced three healthy offspring.)
Mary Bone reported that Walter Allen died of tuberculosis at the age of
55.
In 2008, Bill's research revealed different information. He said
Walter, his great grandfather, was listed in the 1900 census as the 19-year-old
son of Thomas Asariah Wannall and living in Washington, D.C. Bill further
reported that Thomas and Walter again showed up in D.C. in the 1910 census,
"along with Walter's wife Edna," whom Bill determined to be Edna Rose Conway.
Finally, Bill also found Walter's pensioner's record showing he served
in the Army during the War with Spain in 1898 and his draft registration
card for WWI that he signed in 1918 at the age of 28. .
